Our Public Safety Project is underway, and planning & fundraising has begun. The project is being organized by the Public Land Target Shooters committee for the Wolf Creek & McGregor Basin, in the Tillamook State Forest, under the direction of Steve Williams (TNL Board member and Director of the Wolf Creek committee).
The project is to block public access beyond the picnic area by minor grading of small slope and planting native trees and shrubs in flat area and on slope. The current space is encouraging people to shoot in unsafe directions with inadequate, or, no backstop.
The Oregon Dept of Forestry has provided a list of native trees and shrubs and we are currently designing a landscape plan for the area. Cost estimates to be obtained as soon as we get the plan completed. We are looking for volunteers and equipment.
This needs to get done ASAP and ODF has given us the go ahead to do it as an all volunteer project.
It’s projects like this that shine a good light on responsible recreational target shooters. Let’s show em what we got!
Our fundraiser is a little over $800 at this point. Our goal is $3000. We have a ways to go! We are planning on implementing this project in April, or when enough funds are available to begin.
The project will be in 2 phases. First phase this spring, will be a basic planting of the heartiest native plants that stand the best chance of surviving the summer. It will be a mix of big and small plants. The primarily goal of the 1st stage is to block the temptation to shoot anywhere in that area. The 2nd stage will be the final planting in the fall. We will replace those plants who didn’t survive and fill in the remaining needed areas.
If you can help with a donation gift to this project, it will be very much appreciated by all!
Note: For each $500 raised, Trash No Land contributes another $100!
If we raise $1500 by March 31st (half of goal), we can schedule Phase I of the Public Safety Project for the end of April
Phase I will be the excavation & digging with the tractor, plant the first go-round of the hardiest plants that stand the best chance of survival over the summer. At the least, plant most of it on the berm and back ledge that overlooks Wolf Creek Rd. Plant a few on the flat area if can. The flat area is to be tilled up and rough to walk on.
Phase II will be to remove any dead plants, replant as needed and do the final planting of the other varieties.
This will likely play out over one weekend with the excavation conducted on a Saturday, and a volunteer ‘planting party’ for Sunday.
Considering the rate we’ve raised donations to date, I’m confident we’ll be able to move forward as planned. For all those who’ve already donated, many, many thanks and we’ll not hold it against to you if you like to repeat this good deed.
